Two Tablets and a Palm size Projector

Velocity Micro has a few low cost tablets on the market, and these two just announced fit into that category.  But, the low cost, minimally equipped tablet PCs are a “been there, done that” rerun, especially since there is not anything note worthy about these new models, except for the fact they are coming delivered with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) AND are still low priced.

I want to set the discussion about the new tablets aside for a couple of paragraphs to talk about what I believe is the most exciting product announced by VM.  It is the palm size projector with an HDMI input, which also includes a decent resolution and lumens.

The tablet PC added significant ultra portability to the PC product line.  Plus, it made the ability to take PowerPoint presentations anywhere with bulky equipment – except for the projector.  To do a decent presentation, you need to show it on a big screen, which meant taking a bulky projector with you, which eliminated the whole ultra portability concept.

Enter now this palm size project from Velocity Micro.  Here are some specifications about it:

Resolution 1280×768 WXGA HD (3D Ready), Supports Max Resolution 1920×1080
Aspect Ratio 16:10
Brightness 300 Lumens
Contrast Ratio      2,000:1
Uniformity >60%
Display Type 0.45″ WXGA TI DLP®
Dimensions 3.3″ x 4.3″ x 1.2″; only 9 oz
Volume < 278cc
Light Source LED RGB Illumination
Audio Audio WiFi, Stereo Output, Analog Audio Input
Throw Ratio 1.4:1
Inputs Mini HDMI (Supports 1080p), Full USB, Stereo Audio Out, On-Board Media Player

Connect this to your tablet PC to also watch movies, show pictures, play games on a big screen, etc. There is no mention of price yet, but coming from Velocity Micro, I’m betting it will be affordable for most people.

Back to the new tablet PCs just announced by VM.  They announced a 7 inch and a 10 inch tablets, both with the same specifications.  The best part is that they will include Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and they will come with low prices with the 7 inch rumored to be at around $150.

Here are some specifications about these two tablets:

  • Cortex A8 1.2 GHz Processor
  • Flash Player 11
  • Discrete ARM Mali 400MHz 3D Graphics Acceleration
  • 512MB DDR3 RAM
  • 8GB Internal Storage
  • Front-facing Camera
  • HDMI Out
  • Amazon Appstore
  • Android 4.0

A significant thing to note here is that these tablets will not have access to the Android Market.  However, the Amazon AppStore provides a full selection of apps, so that should not be a big issue.  These tablets are coming soon and will be on display at the January CES, 2012 show in Las Vegas.
