Adobe Flash for Android Tablets

Adobe Flash for Android TabletsAdobe Flash for Android Tablets

Adobe Flash For Android Tablets

When Android tablets were first released, they used Adobe Flash for Android to allow users to view Flash content.  Then the technology is moving away from Flash in favor of HTML 5.  Beginning with Android 4.1 Adobe Flash was no longer included or supported.  However, there is still a lot of content that required Adobe Flash. So, how do you get Adobe Flash on Android tablets with Android 4.1 or greater?

All devices running Android versions between 2.2 and 4.0, inclusive, are compatible with Adobe Flash 11.  Devices with Android 3.0 will benefit from enhanced browser handling of websites containing both Flash, HTML, and images.  Each component will be rendered quickly and maintain their separate positions.  Devices using Android 2.2, 2.3, or 2.4 will not benefit from this enhanced browser feature and still may see some overlapping of components.

Apple has banned the Adobe Flash product from all its devices, including the iPad.  This is more than an annoyance to users since many websites and applications use Flash for at least a portion of their development.  Some websites contain a significant amount of Flash, which results in a blank display on devices not supporting Flash.

Here is how to install Adobe Flash on Android tablets with Android 4.1 or greater:

  • Make sure your Android device is connected to the Internet.
  • Open the Settings menu.
  • Select Security (or Applications, on older Android OSs).
  • Place a checkmark next to the “Unknown sources” check box.
  • Tap OK to confirm your selection.
  • Close Settings.
  • Launch the browser.
  • Search for “flash player archive page” or navigate directly to
  • On the Archive page, scroll down to “Flash Player for Android archives”
  • Select a version of Flash Player that is compatible with your Android operating system.
  • Tap the link to download the Flash Player installer. Download begins automatically.
  • When download completes, close the browser.
  • Open Notifications.
  • Tap “install_flash_player.apk”
  • When prompted, tap Install.
  • When installation is finished, tap Done.

Android on an x86 Tablet

Android on an x86 Tablet

Android on an x86 TabletAndroid on an x86 tablet?  Seemed like an impossible task, until now.

Previously, Android was limited to running on tablets and phones with an ARM processor, such as the NVDIA, Samsung and Qualcomm processors.  However, Intel has been working hard to grab a larger share of the market that currently uses ARM processors.

Companies such as Intel and AMD manufacturer processor chips or CPUs using an x86 architecture.  The x86 CPUs have been primarily for full size PCs supporting, originally DOS, and now, Windows, Linux, etc.  Previously, x86 CPUs were power hogs requiring large amounts of power and generating large amounts of heat. These machines required relatively large fans and heat management designs.  As PCs became smaller and more portable running on batteries, this caused a challenge with manufacturers to design more efficient CPUs that drew less power and generated less heat.  Even some notebooks had heat issues and required extra fans to keep them running at a good speed.

With the advent of the tablet PC, they don’t have fans.  The ARM processors run cool and draw much less power.  Batteries lasted longer due to the lower energy requirements.  x86 manufacturers felt the pressure to produce the same cool running processors, but maintain the speed and reliability.

Intel released the Atom line of processors as a low power SoC (System on Chip) to support the x86 based operating systems, such as Windows.  So, it was ARM for Android, and x86 for Windows.  Until now…..

Android on an x86 tablet

Last year, Intel announced a version of their SoC Atom processor family designed for smartphones and tablets.  Based on a partnership between Intel and Google, this new Atom processor will support the Android operating system.

Initially, the Atom family was not designed to support the Linux/Android operating systems, but that has been corrected with this new series of processors.

We are just now seeing Android on an x86 tablet from manufacturers such as the ASUS, Samsung, Acer, Toshiba, and HP are all running the Android operating system using an Intel Atom x86 processor.

Barnes and Noble Galaxy Tab 4 Nook

Barnes and Noble Galaxy Tab 4 Nook

Barnes and Noble Galaxy Tab 4 NookThe Barnes and Noble Galaxy Tab 4 Nook is a 7 inch modified version of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 4 7 inch Android tablet.

Barnes and Noble took the Galaxy Tab 4 and turned it into a Nook tablet.  This tablet does not have Samsung’s Touchwiz software, instead it is loaded with Barnes and Noble’s custom software that turns the Galaxy Tab 4 into a fully functioning Nook tablet with all the features of a Nook, plus much more.

This 7 inch tablet with 8 GB of storage begs for the 32 GB add-on SD card.  I’m not sure you could download very many books and other media from Barnes and Noble without immediately needing the additional storage.  In addition to the on-tablet storage, Barnes and Noble will store all of you Nook related content on their cloud for free.  So, if you have good internet contact whenever you are using the tablet, it seems like the cloud is the way to go for storing the Nook stuff.

This tablet comes with several Nook apps about food, fashion, fitness, educational stuff for kids, and games – all pre-installed.  Plus, they will let you have up to $200 worth of free stuff when you purchase the tablet.  With a Nook device, you can read thousands of books, have subscriptions to magazines and newspapers that are automatically available monthly or weekly.  They have many movies and TV shows as well.

Overall, this seems like a pretty good deal.  But, you can get much of this on any tablet just by downloading the free Android app from Barnes and Noble.
